Well, it just goes to show there are no boundaries if you are determined to do something. Emmanuel Uwechue is a Nigerian artist who lives in China who sings under the alias Hao Ge (pronounced How Guh). His songs are in Mandarin, and he got his claim to fame when he was spotted on CCTV’s popula Lunar New Year Gala.
Uwechue learns Mandarin through Pinyin (the official system to transcribe Chinese characters to teach Mandarin Chinese in China, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan). Interestingly, he began his music career as a country music singer when he wasn’t working as an astrophysicist (he has a mathematics degree from University of Monrovia). He is currently applying for Chinese citizenship.
The Chinese crowds love him and his following is growing (especially among children and middle-aged women, according to the New York Times). Although he enjoys the fame, he feels somewhat restricted by the style of music that Chinese producers insist will sell. He is working on a different style of music for an album.
It will be interesting to see a collaboration between him and some R&B folk. Him singing in Mandarin and them in English. Now that would be fascinating.
