Born and raised in Lagos where he discovered creativity as a 4-year old, Barrett had received best art student award by the time he was 7. In secondary school, he received the best art student 3 years in row, and it was clear that Art was his path in life.

...But his molding was not complete. University degree in the bag, he took the old fashioned route: studying with a master: he understudied Bruce Onobrakpeya for 5 years, mastering the legendary artist’s unique print making techniques. The influence of Onobrapkeya’s use of African Motifs and his style is obvious in Barrett’s work, and it was this period that he had his first exhibitions, being one of the first 14 artist to pioneer for the Harmattan Workshop series and moving on to many exhibitions with the National Art Gallery (then minister of culture singling out his works for attention)...

...In the same tradition, he decided help bring up the next generation, teaching Illustration and Photography at Lagos City University. A chance meeting with renowned photographer Don Barber led to new recognitions for Barrett that realistic photography was truly a means of creative expression. That with a deep understanding of light and the lens, there was no limit to the possibilities in photography.
Skill, study, experience, passion and creativity all converged into one powerful focal point, and Barrett Akpokabayen Photography was born.
