STYLE NIGHT 4

We are going to do something about the children you saw under the bridge at Obalende on, my blog few days back. We don't know specifically what we are going to do, whenwe're going to do it, or how we are going to do it, but we have set in motion the things that will make us do something. We'll take it one child at a time. God willing, we'll help as many as we can.

Style Night 4 (A red carpet event)

A night of Fashion, Modeling, Music, Comedy and DanceAnyway for now there's something going down. Style Night 4. We've done three editions but nothing as huge as what we are about to do. I didn't want to announce it yet until we got something concrete from our sponsors. That happened today, thank God...So people, our fashion show is going downnnnnnnnnn...I'm so thrilled, 'cos getting sponsors for a fashion show in Nigeria is WAR. Real WAR. But we finally did it.

LIFE UNDER THE BRIDGE + NAIJA NEWS

LIFE UNDER THE BRIDGE
When I decided to start a magazine, I felt it was important to stick to the industry I was familiar with; the fashion, modeling and beauty industry, thus the name FM&B.But as time went by, I realised there was more to life than fashion and Style. Much more! So I decided to include human interest stories to give the mag more depth.Looking for more depth, I came up with something that has always held a fascination for me...STREETLIFE. And for our maiden Streetlife page, I decided to deal with the issue of area boys in Lagos.See, I've had a few unpleasant encounters with area boys. I've been harrassed a few times by these guys while driving in the Lagos Metropolitan. If your window is down and you're in traffic, you're bound to get 'nicely' and 'politely' robbed.I used to be so scared of them but after a few encounters, my fear turned to curiosity. Why are these guys this way? What happpened to them? Can they be rehabilitated?I told my editors that I wanted to interview area boys. Initially they thought I was crazy but after much consideration, they agreed it was a good idea. So about two weeks ago we went to one of the most notorious places in Lagos...The picture above is the Obalende bridge. If you live in Lagos, then I don't need to tell you anymore about the place. If you don't live in Nigeria, well, this is one of the most notorious places in Lagos. When you're walking around here, you're advised to hold tightly to your belongings. If your car stops there at night, you're advised to leave the car and find your way out of there. It's that notorious 'cos it's the home of several 'hooligans'.They live under the bridge pictured above. When we went there the first time to survey and make enquiries, I was advised not to go. Somebody told me that the guys were always 'high', and very unpredictable, so couldn't guarantee my safety. But I insisted on going with my guys, so instead of going there looking all pretty, I took my hair weave out, no make up, wore an oversized shirt and went into the lion's den with my General Editor, Odega Shawa, my Special Events Editor, Oteri Agboro and a photographer. Now we actually went there to interview the area boys. We wanted to hear their story. We wanted to know about their family, what they want from the govt, what they can do for their country, are they as dangerous as people say/feel they are? Why are they living under the bridge, are they interested in decent jobs...? etc.Thankfully for us, they were very accomodating. They answered all our questions but refused to have their pictures taken. Some of them were a little suspicious of our motives and they also were 'smoking' you know what...and didn't want to be exposed that way. Anyway, in the course of doing this interviewing, some little children were playing football in the open field under the bridge...(the boys you see in this picture). you proberbly might wonder what these kids would doing in such a place, surrounded by such craziness. After asking around we found that they all lived under the bridge. Some of them are runaways, some are abandoned, some live there with a parent. Different stories. Sad situation! The kids are pictured here with their football coach and asst coach.Every child you see in this picture lives under the Obalende bridge. But the comforting part is that the members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Obalende branch, are playing their part by trying to discover talent amongst these children (through football). They brought these children together and started a football academy, under the bridge. Hoping it will keep them busy and focused on the positive, so they don't end up like the older ones they are surrounded by, considering they have no education whatsoever. That's some area boys and a woman who lives and sells under the bridge with her infant child. On your right is where they cook, eat...Here is Obalende and the Children that live(play) there...These children are so young and innocent and exposed to a life so unfair. under the bridge for about three hours and there you sure will feel dizzy and 'high' from all the 'smoke' inhalation. And these children have to live with this for a long time until something can be done for them.Talking to them you will find out that some of them were actually ambitious and didn't want to end up armed robbers, jailed, or even killed. One particular child said he wanted to be a lawyer. You will get the full story when the magazine hit the stands.if you have a human conscience, you will leave the place feeling a little dejected. These children deserve a better life. Then I asked myself, is it enough to just report these stories? What can I do as a citizen of this country for these children? What can you do? Or maybe a better question is; what can be done for these children?

(All Thanks to my editor-in-Chief:Linda Ikeji. You are a rere gem and a gift to your generation. Your risks will surely pay for a rewarding futrure...you have indeed inspired many with your lifestyle.)
Deola Sagoe's Marriage Crumbles...
as written by Folusa Samuel (Encomium Mag)
This is authoritative. The marriage of popular fashion designer Deola Sagoe to her Ghanaian husband, Koffi Sagoe, has crumbled. Insiders who should know attributed the cause of the failed marriage to irreconcilable differences among other things. Sources again confirmed to Encomium Weekly that a silent war over the custody of the children of the once-upon-a-time happy marriage is now on between the estranged couple. We called the abundantly gifted designer on Sat. June 28th 2008, and she confirmed that indeed her marriage has packed up. "Yes, it is true, she told us and hung up".Sad!

2face/R. Kelly Collabo Ready

This has been buzzing for a while but it can be now confirmed that the much anticipated collaboration between the King of R&B and the Nigerian Hip-Hop/R&B sensation is done and ready. This is a dream come true for 2Face and of course his numerous fans across the globe and it seems that there is no stopping him. After a successful sophomore album, 2Face is set to take his music to the next level with his hot new album.

2Face expressed a lot of excitement and appreciation in a recent interview with a Nigerian magazine about his achievements so far. And who can deny it, he has chalked some amazing successes along the years. “When I look back at my career and how it all started, I am deeply humbled. I never believed I would come this far. That is why I would always be grateful to Kenny Ogungbe, D 1 and the crew at Kennis Music and above all God Almighty who made all this possible. We are like one big family at Kennis,” he said.
About his work with R. Kelly, he had this to say…“He is one man I have tons of respect for. I dreamed of doing stuff with him but it was in the distant future. When Uncle Kenny called me and raised the idea, I was so excited. Off we went, straight to New York, and now the rest is history. We have recorded a love track together– R Kelly and I–just doing our thing, and I’ll tell you, it’s the bomb!”

We thank R. Kelly for working with our African superstar; it will help put our music on the map. There is also talk about R. Kelly coming to Ghana for a one-of-a-kind concert and a possible collaboration with Ghanaian crooner, Kwabena Kwabena. My only advice is that this should happen soon before R. Kelly’s trial turns for the worse. LOL!
(Special thanks to amati for this one too)

IS NOLLYWOOD REALLY THE THIRD BEST?
There is this popular belief that the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, is the third best in the world, following America’s Hollywood and India’s Bollywood. But the candid question which a lot of practitioners have been staying away from is: Is Nollywood the third best in terms of quality or number of movies produced, either monthly or annually, as the case may be?Well, if it is in terms of quality, we should not deceive ourselves because Nollywood is miles away far from its counterparts. Only a few Nollywood movies could measure up.But if we are talking about the number of films released, I think Nollywood should be the numero uno. It produces more flicks on weekly basis, even though most of them are wishy-washy.Having said that, we should stop consoling ourselves unnecessarily that we are number three in the world.Let’s concentrate on how to lift the face of the industry from where it is right now rather than celebrate mediocrity. And if this is not done on time, other smaller African countries that are looking up to us will one day surpass our records. Ask the Super Eagles of Nigeria, who are now being humiliated and disgraced by the underdogs in Africa. In this regard, all guilds and stakeholders in Nollywood have a role to play, particularly the Association of Nigeria Theatre – Arts Practitioners (ANTP).The Jide Kosoko-led ANTP took a step towards this development about two years ago, but it has not made any positive change.Honestly speaking, whenever I watch most of these over-hyped Yoruba movies, I feel like crying, because they are nothing to write home about. Apart from the poor scripting storyline, directing, continuity and other factors that make a good film, most of them are not even relevant to current realities.A word is enough for the wise. I rest my case!

Becca denies romance with Eto'o+earning a cool $90,000 Euros!!
Music star Rebecca Acheampong aka Becca has denied media reports that she was married to Samuel Eto’o, Cameroonian international footballer. According to her management headed by Kiki Banson, Becca and Eto’o were friends and the two were currently working on a movie about the Barcelona striker. The management argued that seeing the two together did not mean they were a couple, adding that they were working on a project. Management was of the view that Becca was too young for marriage and even if she was ready to get married today, Eto’o would not be the lucky man. “Working together does not mean that they are a married couple,” lamented Kiki Banson, Becca’s producer. The movie is a mix of fact and fiction but almost all of it is scripted. There are flashbacks where Eto’o interacts with school teachers, close family people and childhood friends. Becca plays the role of a teenage friend of Eto’o’s. The young singer is earning over 90,000 Euros for playing a lead role with Eto’o in the movie, and apart from that another film production company in South Africa is also negotiating with Becca to play a role in a movie against child abuse which would earn her a huge sum of money.

Tracey Edmonds & Diddy: We're Not Dating

Tracey Edmonds is shooting down a British tabloid report that she is dating music and clothing mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs. A British paper reported that Edmonds, 41, called Diddy "the man for me" and said that he was funnier then her ex, comedian Eddie Murphy. The report, which was widely picked up on the Internet, went on to claim that Edmonds said Diddy "whisked me off my feet." Reps for Edmonds and Diddy both deny that the pair are romantically linked. "Sean is very single," the rep for Diddy says. "He and Tracy have known each other for over 10 years." Edmonds, who produced the 2001 movie Josie and the Pussycats, split from Murphy, 47, in January only two weeks after they held an intimate wedding in Bora Bora. The ceremony was non-binding and they later said they'd decided to "forego having a legal ceremony."
BUT MAKE UNA WAIT OH! IF THE TWO ARE ACTUALLY DATING, WHO CARES ANYWAY...IF THE CHIC THINKS SHE IS COOL WITH THE COMBS WHATS THE BIG DEAL!!! GO GIRLFRIEND, ITS YOUR TIME!

MAN POWER??? DAVOD COOK-AMERICAN IDOL WINNER
You know how everyone is saying Girl Power when there are 2 women competing or if a Woman is on top or whatever, well, as if Male population needs more ego-tripping, I’m going to give props to the 2 Male contestantswhop made it to the finals of on American Idol. Way To Go David Cook and David Archuleta!!. Male Power Indeed :).
Well but more importantly, i want to give a special cudos to David Cook.
Stardom sometimes can be a frustrating, i know what am saying, At least having tasted it during my days at the Nigerian Television Authority, i can testify. The 25-year-old 2008 America Idol winner has spent the hours since his "American Idol" crowning, doing press and attempting to slip into cat naps in the car as he rushes from appointments to interviews. From sleep to singing,
"I’ve gotten absolutely zero hours of sleep," Cook said. "I just haven’t been able to shut the brain off. It’s a celebration."
"After winning ‘American Idol,’ David Cook says "the future is whatever I’m willing to make it," "I want to put out a record right now that will make the hair on the back of my neck stand up."
Stardom sometimes can be a frustrating, i know what am saying, At least having tasted it during my days at the Nigerian Television Authority, i can testify.

Dance-loving talk show hostEllen Degeneres may have met her match: Usher. The R&B star and new dad stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to show off his moves and talk about his most "amazing" project to date. "He is my reason for living," the singer tells Ellen of his 6-month old son, In the episode airing Friday, the newlywed also says of his bride: "She's built up ... the foundation of who I am. I want to see more men standing with their women. I want to see more men be open and honest about where they are in life." And speaking of honesty, when asked what surprised him most about having a baby, the star replied with a laugh: "That I had him – that was a big surprise!" That – and "learning more and more about the beauty of fatherhood," he said. "As an African-American, to be there for my child is so important when there are so many young African-American kids without their fathers. I just want him to grow up to be as wise as he can possibly be, kind and open hearted. [Fatherhood] changes everything about me." Of recent Internet rumors that Usher and Tameka had filed for separation, his manager Benny Medina said: "It's 100% not true. Usher and Tameka are currently traveling in Europe together as a family on his promotional tour. This rumor is completely false."

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINALS SPLITS 9ICE, RUGGEDMAN(TWO NIGERIAN INT'L ARTISTES)

A Honda Accord, C-class Mercedes, two award-plaques, and the pride of two jolly good fellows, Abolore Akande (a.k.a 9ice) and Ugochukwu Stevens (a.k.a Ruggedman), was what was staked for this year’s Champions League final between Chelsea FC and Manchester United in Moscow, Russia, this Wednesday (21st May 2008).Pressure gradually mounting on the duo as the D-day arrived with cars worth almost N5 million at stake, and the pride of both musicians, 9ice, a Chelsea fan, bet his Honda Accord car against Ruggedman’s Mercedes, and the “Revelation of The Year” HHWMA Award.
These were the words of Ruggedman before the match date “i pity the ‘nice’ one as he’s about to start “jumping buses and trekking” to shows. “9ice is just starting out in this business, I suggest he puts his mouth where his money is if he wants to take a stand on his dry team,” he said
.Initially, 9ice had staked his Honda against Ruggedman's Morano Jeep, but the rapper flipped. “What? How can he expect me to bet a jeep worth ten times against his Honda?” “Because he’s a friend and an aburo(small boy), I’m going to bet my Mercedes Benz, though that’s also several times more expensive than his Honda.

REALLY, I CANT PRECISELY SAY WHAT HAS BEEN THE OUTCOMEOF THESE DUO AND THEIR BET, BUT WILL RUGGEDMAN SINCERELY COLLECT THE ONLY ACQUISITION 9ICE HAD MADE FROM HIS RECENT FAME AND STARDOM???

Following the successful launch of her fashion brand, St. Genevieve, very talented actress and mother of one, Genevieve Nnaji has declared to all and sundry that she is not a tailor. There have been talks that she has turned to tailoring and dumped acting that brought her fame and fortune to irk out a living.

Presently, the ready wear cloths can be purchased at Iconola, the outfit of Lamide, but Genny is planning big time to open a boutique on the island, where her ready-to-wear brand, St Genevieve would be easily purchased. She plans to throw the door open for other boutique to purchase in wholesale and take it to other part of the country.

The need to make the designs that have done her pride accessible to other fashion conscious women made her enter into the partnership with Lamide. It is on record that Genny is one of the most fashionable actresses we have in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Genevieve who just returned from a movie location in Abuja told us she is still busy acting and that is the more reason we’ve not been able to sit her down for a chat. That effectively put the rumour that she is no longer getting movie script to rest. That we can tell. But what we can’t however tell is when the former face of Lux would start designing for men, so that we can have a piece of her creative mind on our body.

Ghanaian wins Miss Caribbean
and Commonwealth Pageant
Shirley Dee wins gold at 19th Miss Caribbean and Commonwealth

Well, it seems that Africans have taken over the Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth Beauty Pageant, winning it back to back. Last year it was Nigeria’s Uchenna Obika and this year 20-year-old Ghanaian law student at the University of Kent, Shirley De Lawrence, stood tall to win the contest.
Shirley Dee is the third Ghanaian to have won the title. She held off her determined compatriots Jacqueline Baker and Michelle Supersad, both from Trinidad & Tobago, to second and third respectively. The twin-island state of the Caribbean has furnished either the winner or runner-up in three of the last four contests - the exception being last year when there was no T&T representative. There were representatives from 14 countries including Guyana, Jamaica and Nevis but our African princess took the crown.
Commentators have quoted the judges as saying afterwards that whereas most of the contestants had excellent individual qualities Shirley Dee brought together what was in their opinion the best blend of “good looks, pleasant personality and knowing how to behave”.
The judging panel was made up of former holders of the title Margaret Alcindor and Theresa de Roche, Isaac Tschando, Anne Rose Mordi, Patsy White, and Shyraine Mubiana. Former title-holders Uchenna Obika and Natalie Latan introduced and interviewed the contestants with accompanying entertainment from singer Angel J and the Manic Boyz dancers, Ecology dancers and Tabot Mix, the United Christian Harmony Group and a hairstyling display by Rougz Hair & Beauty Salon.
Shirley was recommended to the competition by Ben Black Photography .according to her, she would like to take her prize holiday in Ghana. Well, we will welcome her home with arms wide open. Akwaaba!

Menaye Donkor - Royal Stool Bearer and Title Holder
Former Miss Ghana Universe 2004 and member of a royal family.

For some people, Menaye Donkor is the pretty face now associated with Sulley Muntari, the football player in the Barclay Premier League, she was Miss Ghana Universe in 2004. She has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from York University.

She has been a royal stool bearer for her paternal grandmother, who is the Queenmother of Agona Asafo (this privilege was assigned to her as the last granddaughter in the family), started a charity called the Menaye Charity Foundation, and opened a the Menaye International School.

She is surprisingly down to earth and is dedicated to making a difference to all those that she comes into contact with. Sulley Muntari spotted her at a Czech game against Ghana and it was a heart stopping moment for him. He wooed her and is one of the largest contributors to her charities.

John Mayer Likes His Man PurseYes, John Mayer sure like his man purse. I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t. From looking at it, the messenger bag looks like it’s functional and certainly stylish around his arm. I don’t recognize the bag designer but I’ll try to find out. No promises though. Yes, I noticed that John Mayer’s Man Purse matched his sweater and shoes :).

You Can’t Go Wrong With Harrison Ford

There’s no doubt that Harrison Ford is still as suave and charming as ever. He can definitely give his young counterparts a run for their money. Style wise and certainly, career wise. Harrison Ford possesses the smile that could melt anyone’s heart and a fun and kickass personality to boot.

Sometimes I could curse myself for finding the most strangest thing in the world. Dennis Rodman is one of them. The NBA star mostly known for his weird antics just celebrated his 47th birthday in Planet Hollywood. 47, wow. He’s still, well, Dennis Rodman huh? 3 more years and he’ll 50. Unfortunately, he’d still be dressed looking like this when the time comes. Yeah, so attractive right? Arrrgh.
One more picture of Dennis Rodman after the fold….
